Pelvic floor dysfunction is a complex issue that can impact women of any age. Changes in how the pelvic floor muscles work (either weakness or overactivity) can occur as a result of trauma, pregnancy and childbirth, pain, stress and biomechanical issues. When the pelvic floor muscles are not functioning correctly it can cause incontinence, constipation, pain and lead to pelvic organ prolapse. There can be an effect on surrounding joints and muscle groups too including the hips, low back and core muscles.
How We Can Help
A pelvic health physiotherapist is an expert in managing pelvic floor dysfunction. The assessment is thorough, bespoke to your symptoms and can include an internal vaginal examination. This will be discussed with you fully at the appointment and is not compulsory. The personalised treatment plans use targeted exercises, manual therapy, and relaxation methods to improve the function of pelvic floor muscles, relieve pain, and improve pelvic health as a whole. This is a whole-person method that includes both physical and emotional issues.
